The Volcker Alliance Announces Chicago Conference on State Budget Challenges
The Volcker Alliance, the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, and the University of Illinois Institute of Government and Public Affairs (IGPA) invite you to join us at the Union League Club of Chicago on December 7th at 8:30am for a special forum: “Transparency and Accountability in State Budgeting: Challenges for Illinois and Other States.” The event will feature Alliance Board member Richard Ravitch, State and Local Programs Director William Glasgall, state budgeting experts Katherine Barrett and Richard Greene, as well as speakers from the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, IGPA, the National Association of Budget Officers, Municipal Market Analytics Inc., and Illinois Issues magazine.
As the Alliance’s recent Truth and Integrity in State Budgeting report pointed out, never has there been such a critical need to improve states’ fiscal procedures. Transparency and accountability in state budgeting can help the public understand the true nature, cost, and consequences of tax and spending policy choices. As we’ve seen first-hand in Illinois, when states obscure the budgeting process, it becomes impossible for scholars, advocates, and leaders to understand the true magnitude of fiscal problems, and makes finding solutions all the more difficult. At the forum, we will discuss best budgeting practices in states and how they can be put into action.
