NextGen DC Career Exploration - group shot at capitol building

In June, the Volcker Alliance hosted the Next Generation Service Corps Public Service Career Exploration trip to Washington, DC, in partnership with the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public and International Affairs. While in DC, NextGen Service students engaged with a range of public service leaders and networked with NextGen Service peers from across the country. The students also heard from University of Pittsburgh and Syracuse University alumni working in the nation’s capital about their career trajectories, showcasing various public service pathways.

Emily Cruz, University of Houston ‘24, found the site visit to the Government Accountability Office (GAO) particularly enlightening for her career interests.

“My favorite session was learning about the US Government Accountability Office, known as the congressional watchdog. I found it fascinating to learn how the GAO conducts research to track progress and evaluate the impact of legislation,” Emily said. “I have a strong passion for research, especially when it can effectively bridge communities and government. This session sparked an interest in exploring avenues where I can contribute to public policy through rigorous research and analysis.”

Alison Holst, The City College of New York ’26, also appreciated hearing from staff at the GAO, the Environmental Defense Fund, and the Partnership for Public Service about their work.

“During our visit, we learned about the many agencies and organizations that work in DC as well as the many pathways for public service careers that exist within the city,” Alison said. “Having the opportunity to visit these agencies/organizations, and speak to their staff, was not only insightful but impactful in helping guide my next steps toward a career in public service.”

The Next Generation Service Corps has catalyzed a national network of undergraduate students who are committed to serving their communities and charting the future of our democracy. Read more about NextGen Service here.
